The subway (a train) is much cheaper than a taxi. The subway is only $2.25 per person no matter how far you go, a taxi is $3.00 just to get into the car plus additional costs for travel distance and time. There are numerous subways in Times Square (and Broadway is a street but “Broadway” the theater district is within the Times Square area). Chinatown can be a direct train from Times Square (the N, Q, R, or W (yellow circle) trains go directly to Canal Street, which is Chinatown). If you stay on the N or Q trains to the end of the line, you can get to Coney Island. You can also take the N,Q,R or W to 34th Street-Herald Square then get the D or F train (orange circles) to Coney Island. For both trains, the direction FROM Times Square TO where you are going is “downtown and Brooklyn”.

Not only taking the subway (metro) is cheaper, its quicker than a taxi; and yes, there is a subway station in the Times Square area.

If you want to go to Chinatown, you can take the downtown (southbound) #1, “N”, “R”, “Q” or “W” train (Red or Yellow Lines on the subway map) to Canal Street.

For Coney Island, take the Brooklyn (southbound) “N” train (Yellow Line) to Stillwell Avenue-Coney Island.

The fare on the subway is $2.25 per ride, regardless of distance. However, if you’re in town for a week or two, you can purchase an unlimited ride MetroCard, which is a huge money saver. The 7-day pass will cost you $27, while the 14-day pass will cost you $51.50.

I hope this information was very helpful. If you have any questions or need travel directions while in town, just drop me a line by clicking on the avatar and e-mail icon in the profile. I’ll be glad to help.

    Good luck

Taxis are very expensive in NY. Therefore, a train, subway, bus, rail, or express bus would be cheaper.
